Slottet

Slottet is the most lavish building at Gustafsberg. It was built around 1830 with apartments that were exceptionally spacious even at the time. The building contains Chinese rice-paper wallpaper brought home aboard ships belonging to shipyard owner Carl J. Engelke. Slottet was reserved for upper-class spa guests.
Today, as in the past, the building provides overnight accommodation.

Archbishop Anton Niklas Sundberg and his wife Klara Kristina Charlotta, born Koch, were both from Uddevalla. They were loyal visitors, spending their first summer here in 1855 and their last in 1899.
They ate at the restaurant and took coffee after dinner every day with Anton Niklas’s sister, Mrs Radhe, who lived in Bikupan.
The Sundbergs always took an evening walk known as “Around the World”. It led from Slottet through the park, past Societetshuset and along the grand avenue, before turning left around Lilla Bodele.
Klara is said always to have walked a few steps behind her husband. In later years, however, she took her place beside him to support him. The walk ended with a rest on the white corner bench that stood for many years on the veranda of Varmbadhuset.
